The venue is usually the biggest single cheque you will write for your wedding, and in Northamptonshire the range is wide. A weekday booking at a village hall or a converted farm building can cost a fraction of a Saturday in August at a country estate with in-house catering. This guide explains how venues price their weddings in 2026, what the averages actually say, and where the extra costs tend to hide, so you can compare quotes properly before paying a deposit.

The 2026 figures in brief

Northamptonshire sits in the East Midlands, which is currently the cheapest region in the UK for venue hire. A 2026 UK wedding survey of more than 7,000 couples put the average East Midlands venue hire cost at £4,739, excluding catering, against a UK average of £6,040. Once catering is included, the UK average rises to £9,695. Most couples across the country spend somewhere between £3,000 and £10,000 on their venue.

Those are averages, not quotes. Your own figure depends on the day, the month, your guest numbers and how much of the day the venue provides. The table below pulls together the most useful survey figures.

Three ways venues charge

Before comparing two venues, work out which pricing model each one uses. A low headline figure can mean very different things.

Venue hire only

You pay a fixed fee for the space, and bring in your own caterer, bar, furniture and sometimes even toilets and lighting. Barns, marquee sites and some village halls work this way. The hire fee looks modest, but it is only the starting point. Ask for a list of everything you will need to source yourself.

Per-head packages

Hotels, golf clubs and many country-house venues quote a package price per guest that bundles room hire, a drinks reception, a wedding breakfast, table wine and an evening buffet. Packages are easy to budget for because the cost moves in step with your guest list. Check the minimum numbers, as many packages set a floor for day and evening guests on peak dates.

Exclusive use

Exclusive use means the whole venue, and often its bedrooms, is yours for the day or the weekend, with no other events or public guests. It is the most expensive option at most venues, but it removes any sharing of spaces and can include accommodation that would otherwise be booked separately. Confirm how many bedrooms are included and whether you are expected to fill them.

How the day and month change the price

Saturdays in summer are the most expensive dates almost everywhere. Survey data suggests Friday and Sunday bookings typically cost 20 to 30 per cent less than Saturdays, and January, February and November are the cheapest months. August was the most popular month for 2026 weddings, followed by May, so these are the dates that sell first.

Midweek weddings can bring larger savings, and many venues publish separate weekday rates. If your guests are mostly local, a Thursday or Friday in spring or autumn is worth pricing alongside your preferred Saturday.

What is usually included, and what often is not

Every venue's inclusions differ, so ask for them in writing. Items commonly included in a package:

  • Ceremony room and reception room hire
  • Tables, chairs and standard linen
  • Catering staff and a wedding co-ordinator on the day
  • A drinks reception, wedding breakfast and table wine (package venues)
  • A cake stand and knife, and a basic dance floor

Items that are frequently extra:

  • Chair covers, upgraded linen, centrepieces and a PA system
  • Bedrooms, including the couple's room on the night
  • Evening food above a set number of guests
  • Late licence or extended finish time
  • Outdoor ceremony set-up

Costs that catch couples out

The quotes that look cheapest on paper are sometimes the ones with most add-ons. Survey data lists the most common extras as corkage (typically £5 to £30 a bottle if you supply your own drink), charges for external suppliers, overtime rates, cleaning fees, parking charges and generator hire for outdoor spaces.

A few more to check in the contract:

  • Service charge. Some venues add a percentage to food and drink. Ask whether it is included in the per-head price.
  • VAT. Confirm every price includes it.
  • Supplier restrictions. If you must use the venue's approved list for catering, bar or entertainment, budget accordingly. The survey figure of £159 per head for venues with a required supplier list, against about £114 for in-house catering, shows the difference this can make.
  • Price rises. For bookings a year or more ahead, ask whether the per-head price is fixed or will be adjusted to the rate in force on the wedding date.
  • Registrar fees. If you marry at the venue, the registrars' attendance is paid to the council, not the venue. See below.

The registrar fee for a venue ceremony

For a civil ceremony at an approved venue in Northamptonshire, the local council charges its own fee for the registrars to attend. Both West Northamptonshire Council and North Northamptonshire Council publish the same 2026/27 rates for ceremonies in standard hours:

Day of ceremony (2026/27)Council fee
Monday to Thursday£634
Friday, 1 June to 30 September£717
Saturday, 1 June to 30 September£753
Sunday, bank holidays and special dates£769

Friday and Saturday rates are a little lower outside the summer season. You also each pay £46.50 to give notice. Check the latest figures on the West Northamptonshire Council ceremony fees page or the North Northamptonshire Council ceremony fees page, depending on where your venue is. Our guide to getting married in Northamptonshire covers the legal steps in full.

A worked example

Using national averages, an 80-guest wedding (the average guest count in a 2026 UK wedding survey) at the average all-in cost of £117.10 per guest comes to roughly £9,370. Add a summer Saturday registrar fee of £753 and two notice fees of £46.50 and the total passes £10,200 before any extras. A Thursday in October at a venue with lower per-head pricing could bring the same wedding in thousands of pounds cheaper. Use a sum like this as a sense check against the quotes you receive.

Ways to save on your Northamptonshire venue

  1. Move the date. A Friday, Sunday or winter date is the single biggest saving most couples can make.
  2. Trim the day guest list. On per-head pricing, every day guest costs far more than an evening guest.
  3. Ask about late availability. Venues sometimes discount unsold dates within the next few months.
  4. Combine ceremony and reception. Marrying at the venue avoids transport between two locations, though you will pay the council's venue ceremony fee.
  5. Negotiate the package, not just the price. A free drinks upgrade or included bedroom can be easier for a venue to give than a discount.
  6. Read the drinks policy. If corkage is reasonable, supplying your own wine can cut the bar bill.

Comparing quotes like for like

Ask each venue for a full written quote for your actual guest numbers and preferred date, then add in anything you would need to hire separately. Only then compare the totals. A hire-only barn and an all-inclusive hotel package are not comparable until both include food, drink, furniture and staff.

Start with the wedding venues in Northamptonshire directory, and widen the search to venues across the East Midlands or neighbouring Leicestershire venues if your guests can travel. For help choosing between styles, read our guide to barn and country-house venues in the East Midlands.

How much deposit do Northamptonshire venues ask for?

It varies by venue. Many ask for a non-refundable booking deposit to hold the date, followed by staged payments, with the balance due a set number of weeks before the wedding. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and consider wedding insurance.

Is it cheaper to marry at the register office and hold the reception elsewhere?

The ceremony itself is cheaper. North Northamptonshire Council offers a registration-only service with two witnesses for £74.50, including the certificate, on set weekdays. You would still pay for the reception venue, and you may need transport between the two.

How far ahead should we book a venue?

Popular summer Saturdays are often booked well over a year ahead. Off-peak and midweek dates are easier to secure at shorter notice. Book the venue before other suppliers, as your date depends on it.

Are per-head prices negotiable?

Sometimes, particularly for off-peak dates or bookings made at short notice. Venues are often more flexible on inclusions, such as an upgraded drinks package, than on the headline price.

Are East Midlands venues really cheaper than elsewhere?

On average, yes. The same survey puts the East Midlands at the bottom of the regional table for venue hire, at £4,739 against £7,144 in Scotland, the most expensive region. Averages hide a wide spread, though, and a stately home in Northamptonshire can still cost far more than a hotel elsewhere.
