Yorkshire and Humber consists of the four counties that make up Yorkshire, North, South, East and West, formerly known as ‘the Ridings’ but changed during the 1970s during a major governmental reorganisation of county boundaries and names. Collectively, Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK and offers arguably some of the finest landscapes with the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors popular with tourists and famous for their warm Northern hospitality.
Yorkshire is described by its residents as ‘God’s own country’ and despite its size, Yorkshire and Humber still retains a distinct charm and unique identity. It is a historic county too so there are plenty of stunning backdrops for a smart wedding, whether you are looking for a town or country setting.
For a metropolitan wedding, there are plenty of approved venues both traditional and contemporary across Yorkshire and Humber’s urban centres including Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, York and Hull. Prosperity and wealth from the industrial revolution has created fine civic buildings and stylish hotels to host weddings of all sizes and tastes. There are also more unusual locations like museums and waterside settings and converted industrial buildings offering something different and minimalist.
Glorious countryside is one of the main reasons tourist flock to Yorkshire every year. Attractive market towns and picturesque villages pepper the landscape with its hallmark patchwork of old stone walls. There is an endless selection of stately homes, grand estates, Tudor halls, hidden manor houses, follies, abbeys, mills and timbered barns set in wild and dramatic landscapes or alternatively, serene parkland and tranquil gardens.
Yorkshire has a coastline for brides and grooms looking for a seaside wedding. Pick a remote headland or beachside wedding, an historic coastal town like Whitby or a classic ‘bucket and spade’ backdrop at one of the many Victorian resorts – Scarborough is one of the favourites.
Yorkshire and Humber offers an enviable combination of city, coast and countryside all of which Yorkshire does to the max. This region of four beautiful counties simply caters for every type of wedding and without the hothouse environment of the south east.
Well connected for travel, there are great road and rail links throughout the region. The M1 motorway and the A1(M) offer access from the North and South and link to other motorways like the M6 and major trunk roads. Yorkshire lies on the East Coast mainline railway from London King’s Cross with regular express train services and there are a variety of regional airports with Leeds Bradford airport providing international flights.
